Sato Ryuto started his brand while still in fashion school, and the reason was simple. "I wanted many people to wear the things I made."

His work sits in street and skater fashion but what makes it stand out is something more technical. Most jeans follow a flat standard pattern and that's exactly what he wanted to move away from. "My niche is 3D silhouettes to break away from the limited silhouettes of jeans." Every piece is built by hand which gives him full control over how the fabric holds its shape. "My designs feature a three-dimensional silhouette never before seen in jeans and I create them all by myself."

The inspiration behind the shapes doesn't come from other clothing. Architecture, natural scenery, and characters feed into how the fabric folds and moves. "I mainly use denim," he says. A material with weight and history that most designers treat as a starting point, but Sato treats as the main focus.

Getting seen

Building a brand from scratch as a student isn't easy, and getting people to actually notice the work has been the biggest challenge so far. "Although I only just started the brand, I found it difficult to get people to see it."

He's already thinking past individual pieces though. "In the future, I would like to create items that can be worn in a variety of situations." Full collections that travel across different parts of life, not just one context.
