Zey Zerpentz started his brand for one reason, to get his creativity out. What it has become since is harder to put into words, and that is kind of the whole idea.
"They're not just looking for clothes," he says about the people drawn to his work. "They're looking for an identity, an artistic vision, and a proposal with content."
His pieces are emotional and experimental, raw and expressive and hard to ignore. "The message is always linked to the freedom to be. To contrast, to break the established, and to question what fashion really is."
How he works
His process starts with whatever is going on inside. A mood, a word, something random that sparks a visual idea. "Sometimes a feeling leads me to a shape, sometimes a word leads me to a texture."
Materials come after the concept, never before. He is drawn to contrast, rough next to smooth, rigid next to soft, recycled fabrics that have already had a life. "I care that the material helps tell the story of the garment. It should have a presence of its own, not go unnoticed."
Standing out
The indie fashion scene in Chile has exploded and Zey knows it. "It became fashionable to create clothing brands. So you have to stand out if you want to do well."
He doesn't hesitate when asked what makes his work different. "I humbly believe that there's a difference between brands that follow trends and brands that make fashion."
He has also had to figure out social media on his own, leaning into video to reach more people without losing what the work actually means. "If my brand grew, it would give a good image to the Chilean industry."
What's next
Zey wants the brand to become a full artistic platform, collaborations, public projects, experimental work. "Sometimes I feel that fashion is very overloaded with empty image. That's why I'm interested in giving it back depth."
His advice to anyone starting out is pretty simple. "Do something uncomfortable or different. Don't just stick with what you see on the networks."
